Many in our community are enthusiastically wondering about the reopening of our Western Avenue facilities. We don't have an exact date just yet, but our best estimation is that we will be set to reopen in the summer 2024.

Please continue, along with us, to be patient and look forward to our doors reopening on the lakeshore! We appreciate your ongoing support and understanding.

Reconstruction is coming along. The pool is ready to fill, the BRAND NEW gym floor is ready for the finishing coat, the new sauna is installed, the front desk is being constructed, etc.! We are on track for re-opening summer ‘24. It’s looking great in the new facility and will be worth the long wait. Thank you, Muskegon, for your patience, understanding, and most of all support. We look forward to welcoming you through the doors soon!

Construction Updates

9/26/2022

Update: Ground has been broken and renovations are underway!

If you drive past today, you’ll see mounds of unearthed timber from the days when our peninsula was home to a sawmill. The lumber company buried the old boards and logs to fill the lake and make their property larger!

Don’t forget to check out our new temporary locations at Kingdom Life (1215 Apple Ave) and the Fresh Coast Alliance Training Center (1128 Roberts St).

10/6/2022

This week saw significant demolition and removal of the former HVAC system from the building. The front walkway has been broken apart for the future laying of bedrock and foundation for the largest part of our expansion.

11/1/2022

Update: Construction begins on the entrance. A foundation has been laid for the largest addition. To the left of the front doors, a wing of offices and a commercial kitchen will be installed.

December 2022 Update

Second Floor East

The second floor has new wall frames going up quickly! Electricians have already been through to install outlet boxes into new spaces!
Locker Rooms

Drop ceilings have been removed for installation of new air handling system. Ultimately, the ceilings will keep most of this height, and be painted for a modern and spacious look.

Here you see the black wall that was our front desk backdrop. The desk and flooring have been demolished. The elevators will remain accessible from both the Neal Fitness Center as well as to the Boys & Girls Club side of the building.
Fitness Studios

This is the location of future Fitness studios. Notice the tile of the former whirlpool. The workers had so much trouble removing that tile!
The expansion...

Just a few weeks ago, there were windows where that translucent plastic sheeting is now. This area will expand towards the parking lot by approximately 1000 ft sq.

Boys & Girls Club jrs will have their own space on the second floor that includes age group rooms, a STEM lab, an art studio, and MORE!
Steel frames nearly ready

The new addition (which the forman said would be enclosed and heated within just a few weeks) will include a full sized cafeteria and kitchen, offices, a clinic, and a welcoming lobby for the youth. The second floor with have innovative workspaces and rental space for more community partners!

From the second floor mezzanine we can see the planned (green)front door of the Neal Fitness Center. It will lead into a spacious atrium and member lounge, with a concession bar and member services desk. The blue rectangles represent floor to ceiling windows, coming soon.

January 24, 2023

February 7th, 2023 -Clubhouse Jr's rec room for 9-12 year olds. Framing in for windows and doors.

February 7th, 2023 -The new Art Studio! A wall-length counter with sinks and storage will be along the wall to the left, and to the right are windows looking out over Lake Muskegon. Talk about inspiration!

February 7th, 2023 -Roof framing for the second floor addition.

February 7th, 2023 - This fitness class space will get infill and flooring soon. Walls will go up ahead to create two handicap accessible restrooms. The far wall to the right will be part of the new weight room.

February 7th, 2023 -Looking through one of the future fitness class spaces we can see what will become 4 universally accessible changing/shower rooms. Hallway lockers will be available for day use.

February 7th, 2023 - In-fill and flooring will be added to the universally accessible changing/shower rooms after plumbing fixtures are complete.

February 7th, 2023 - A view from inside the women's locker room. You can see a section is being transformed into the new aquatics office. This space will be framed and drywalled; and a window and door will be added pool-side.

February 7th, 2023 - Framing for the door to the new aquatics office will be placed soon. Fresh lighting has been installed to brighten the space and produce a 75% energy savings!

February 7th, 2023 - The pool is still there! It's not going anywhere, but plans are still in the works to give this community gem a new lease on life!

February 7th, 2023 - Back over to the Boys & Girls side, the Teen zone will get additional restrooms near the backyard entrance.

February 7th, 2023 - The Teen Zone will have spacious areas for academics, gaming, and relaxing.

February 7th, 2023 - Our new kitchen will serve up hundreds of children everyday, both during the school year, as well as during school breaks and summer!

February 7th, 2023 - Final framing is being done on the second floor of the addition. Roof placement is expected in the next two weeks.

February 21st, 2023 Update

Getting Closer! Roofing will be installed next, followed by the wall panels, which are visible on the ground here. We are getting so close to the outside becoming INSIDE!goes here
Mudding of the drywall on the 2nd floor is almost complete. This corridor divides the Junior Club members Rec Room from a Stem Lab and E-Sports gaming room.
Fresh Paint in the Gymnasium makes this space bright and welcoming. We are working with local artists as well as our youth members to create a dynamic mural to bring life to this space.
Even the pipes for the fire suppression system are shiny and new!
The Spin Studio will be located off the second floor mezzanine. Flooring is slated to be installed in the coming months.
Window and door frames were added to the new Aquatics Office. 16 new high-efficiency lamps have been installed, though they are not in use in this photo.
Secure access points between the Neal Fitness Center and the Boys & Girls Club space will ensure the safety of our youth, but allows for supervised access to the pool and fitness spaces.

6 months of progress!

90% of drywall mudding on the second floor is now complete!
A welcoming vestibule with restrooms has been designed into each of the youth spaces.
This spacious room will house our new Art Studio. This room will have several sinks, a menagerie of cupboard storage space, 6 ceiling mounted extension power stations, and a gorgeous view of Lake Muskegon!
A ‘garage’ style door will be installed here to divide our STEM lab space and a lego build space.
Our STEM lab will house variety of technology exploration spaces, including 3D printers, VR gaming and education tools, Legos, robotics, and MORE!
Roofing install is begining. Install blocking for insulated metal panels on south addition will happen in the next two weeks.
From the mezzanine balcony, we get a new angle of what will be two separate floors of fitness space, including the Spin room.
Our gymnasium space has been brightened with fresh paint and new lighting.
New air handlers, scaffolding for window install, and a crane for roofing install.
